Eggs, Eggs & More Eggs!

Stewart

As a young girl thumbing my way through a Martha Stewart Living magazine, I would often day dream about owning chickens and having fresh eggs to collect someday.  Not just any chickens, and not just any eggs!  No, I wanted chickens that laid the beautiful blue and green eggs!  I think my heart would actually start racing as I planned it all out in my head.  At that time I made a list of “goals” so to speak.  It was a rather lengthy list and included aspirations such as “do the splits with ease” or “speak at least three different languages” and “back pack across Europe”.  Good grief!  Well, even though the direction my life took didn’t exactly include those things { at least not yet 😉 }, one item on the list did come to pass.  Own chickens that laid ‘Martha Stewart green’ eggs!  Yes, I actually called them that.

Here are a couple of pictures showing what our chickens laid in only two days time.  We currnetly have a variety of hens and amongst those are about a dozen Araucanas.  They are the breed that lay the coveted greenish-blue eggs.  Auracanas are also known as ‘Easter Eggers’.  If you are considering owning your own chickens for their fresh egg production, I highly recommend it!  It takes hard work and effort to figure it out, but it has been so rewarding!  And I have to say that most of the credit for the hard work goes to my husband.  Building their laying bins, making sure they are protected from the eliments, etc.

I hope to be able to share more of what we have learned about being “chicken farmers” in the future.  Or at least point you in the direction of the sites that we have found to be the most valuable in helping us get started!
