Spring Is Coming!!!

I’m almost giddy with excitement! I finally took the time to sit down and plan out my spring garden! I vowed last year to get an earlier start this go around. I really didn’t want to miss out on the late winter planting and early spring yields. I was so bummed out last year when I didn’t get to plant my beloved sugar snap peas. Procrastination doesn’t pay!

Catalog

This year I placed an order through Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds Co. I wanted to try my luck at growing some of the more rare varieties of plants out there. I have to admit, it was a tiny bit overwhelming. So many choices! The rest of my seeds I bought from Dillard Feed & Seed Inc., a local family owned and operated business that has been around longer than I have! My dad still buys his seeds from Dillards every year and has been doing so for as long as I can remember. You can’t beat the smell of an old feed store

Here is the inside view of Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Bank, located in Petaluma, CA. It is literally an old bank that has been converted into a ‘seed bank’.

There are well over a 1,000 different seed varieties available! As if I needed another reason to visit California again!

I’m in love with the old-timey feel of Dillards Feed store! It’s as if  it has been frozen in time…

There are a few new things on my gardening list this year. I will be planting Carrots and Kale, which are both a first for me. Last year my baby sister planted kale and had it coming out her ears! It was so hardy; it literally grew like a weed! That is the kind of growing I like to do! Bellow is a list of all the plants I will be attempting to grow. I divided them by ‘when and where to plant’ categories.

Start indoors and transfer outdoors after last frost {These plants are tender}

Leeks {Bleu De Solaise}
Onions {purple & vidalia}{or buy as ‘sets’ and plant directly in the ground}
Eggplant {Rosita, Red China & Casper varieties} Lot’s of color!
Tomatoes {Roma, Cherub, Early Girl, Sungold, Minibel & Gezahnte}
Tomatillo
Bell peppers {Red & green} & Jalapeños
Broccoli {Early purple & Waltham 29}
Cauliflower {Green Macerata}
Cucumbers {Marketmore, Boston pickling}
Cantaloupe

Direct Seed in garden before last frost {These plants are hardy}

Kale {Blue Curled Scotch & Ornamental Fringed mix}
Spinach {flat leaf}
Carrots {Parisienne, Purple Cosmic, Amarillo & standard}
Peas {Little Marvel, English}
Radish {Pink Beauty, Bartender}
Lettuce {Bibb, Romaine}

Direct seed in garden after last frost {Tender}

Green Beans
Watermelon {Big stripe, gold strike, Royal Sweet}
Okra
Pumpkins {Jarrahdale, Flat White Boer, Miniature White, Jack O Lantern, Sugar Pie, Miniature Orange}
Squash {Spaghetti, Yellow Crook Neck, Yellow straight, Zucchini}

I know this might seem like a lot, but I have twenty-one raised beds to fill! Thankfully, I have plenty of helpers. The benefits of a large family…

Oh, and by the way,

Spring is coming!
